The San Diego Art Directory, in collaboration with Hera Hub Carlsbad, invites artists to submit work for Her Wild Becoming, an exhibition exploring transformation, identity, instinct, and the forces within us that refuse to remain still.
What happens when the part of us that has been contained begins to move?
In Her Wild Becoming, “Her” is not one woman or one fixed identity.
Her is an energy.
An instinctive, creative, restless force that exists beneath the roles, expectations, identities, and versions of ourselves we learn to carry.
And “wild” does not mean wilderness.
It means uncontained.
It is the energy that emerges when intuition becomes louder than expectation. When an old identity no longer fits. When something ends and something unnamed begins. When we allow ourselves to change without knowing exactly what we are changing into.
Becoming can happen through aging, desire, motherhood, illness, healing, migration, grief, love, loss, freedom, reinvention, creativity, or simply the realization that the person we have been is no longer the whole story.
Sometimes becoming means expansion.
Sometimes it means shedding.
Sometimes it means breaking apart.
Sometimes it means returning to something that was there all along.
This exhibition asks artists to consider:
What does becoming feel like?
Artists are invited to interpret the theme expansively through portraiture, figurative work, landscape, symbolism, organic forms, movement, texture, fragmentation, memory, the body, or other visual languages.
We invite artwork that explores the experience, tension, movement, and energy of transformation.
Works may be bold or quiet, beautiful or uncomfortable, intimate or expansive, resolved or uncertain.
This exhibition is about the complicated space between who we have been and who we are becoming.
Artists of all backgrounds and identities are welcome.
Entry fees cover organizing and curating costs and do not guarantee inclusion in the exhibition.
Artists retain 90% of artwork sales.
The remaining 10% supports the programs of San Diego Art Directory.
Submission Deadline: October 26, 2026
This exhibition is not about retreating from reality, but about honoring the spaces that help us remain human within it.
