Activated Spaces is an art rental program by the San Diego Art Directory, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting local artists with local businesses. We curate and install rotating exhibitions of artwork in business spaces throughout San Diego — from cafés and offices to boutiques and co-working spaces.

How It Works

  • Curated Installations
    Our team works with each business to understand the desired aesthetic, themes, and environment. We then curate a custom collection of artwork from local artists, arrange the installation, and rotate the selection every 3, 6, or 9 months.
  • Art for Rent – and for Sale
    Businesses pay a modest rental fee (based on the chosen rotation duration) — 100% of which goes directly to the artists. All artwork on display is also available for purchase, and we handle all sales transactions. Artists keep 90% of the sales proceeds, while 10% goes back into the program to support future exhibitions.
  • Minimal Effort, Maximum Impact
    We manage everything — from artist coordination and installation to sales and rotation. Your business gets fresh, engaging art that creates a vibrant atmosphere and supports San Diego’s creative economy.

Artist-Led Curation & Paid Opportunities for Local Artists

Activated Spaces is built on a simple belief: artists should lead the creative ecosystem that represents them. To put this into practice, every exhibition in the program is managed by a local artist hired as a Project Manager/Curator on a project-by-project basis. These paid roles provide meaningful professional development opportunities while ensuring that each installation reflects authentic, artist-informed decision-making.

Our Project Managers handle the full exhibition cycle — from planning, open call development, and artist communication to curation, installation, and coordination with the hosting business. This model ensures that the program is not only artist-centered on the walls, but also behind the scenes.

To make this possible, application fees collected during the open call are dedicated directly to compensating the Project Manager, creating a self-sustaining structure that reinvests in the local creative workforce.

This approach strengthens the region’s cultural economy by:
